Sewage Treatment Plant

Sewage refers to the waste generated from residential, institutional, commercial, and industrial sources. SVG's Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) effectively treats sewage to make it safe for disposal, agricultural use, or domestic purposes, such as toilet use.

Sewage typically contains a high concentration of organic and inorganic waste, making it crucial to treat it before it enters any water body.

If untreated sewage is allowed to flow into water sources, it can lead to contamination, which is why proper treatment is essential before discharging it into rivers or other water bodies.

  • Fully automatic and semi-automatic STP plants

Primary Treatment

In SVG's primary treatment process, wastewater is first passed through a screen to remove large objects suspended in the water. Next, the water enters a grit chamber where materials such as sand, gravel, eggshells, bone chips, seeds, and other debris are removed. This step is essential to prevent heavy deposits in aeration tanks, digesters, channels, and conduits.

The water then moves to primary settling tanks, which are typically large, where solids settle by gravity and are removed as sludge. Meanwhile, oil floats to the surface and is skimmed off. This process removes 50-60% of suspended solids and reduces the five-day biological oxygen demand by 30-40%.

Secondary Treatment

Secondary treatment is the second stage in SVG's wastewater treatment process. After the primary treatment removes suspended solids, colloidal particles, oil, and grease, the wastewater undergoes biological treatment to eliminate organic matter. This is done by indigenous microorganisms such as bacteria and protozoa, which break down biodegradable contaminants like sugar, fat, detergent, and food waste.

These biological processes are sensitive to temperature, with higher temperatures accelerating the rate of reactions:

Aerobic Treatment: This biological treatment uses oxygen to break down organic matter and remove pollutants like nitrogen and phosphorus. Aerobic treatment is commonly used in sewage treatment systems.

Anaerobic Treatment: In this process, wastewater is broken down by microorganisms without the need for dissolved oxygen. Anaerobic bacteria can utilize oxygen found in oxides introduced into the system or obtain it from the organic material within the wastewater.

Tertiary Treatment

Tertiary treatment is the third and most advanced stage in SVG's wastewater treatment process. It focuses on removing nitrogen and phosphorus from the water. This stage involves processes such as filtration, ion exchange, activated carbon adsorption, electrodialysis, nitrification, and denitrification.

The specific treatment options in tertiary treatment depend on the characteristics of the effluent after secondary treatment and the required quality of the final water. For instance, if potable water is needed, processes like filtration and disinfection are applied to treat the wastewater.

Frequently asked questions

A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is a system designed to remove contaminants from wastewater, making it safe for discharge or reuse. It helps in preventing water pollution, conserving resources, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

SVG offers a variety of STPs, including conventional activated sludge systems, Membrane Bioreactors (MBR), Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBR), and Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR), tailored to suit residential, commercial, and industrial needs.

Yes, treated sewage water can be reused for purposes like irrigation, landscaping, cooling towers, or even industrial processes, depending on the treatment level and compliance with local regulations.

Absolutely! SVG provides end-to-end solutions, including design, installation, commissioning, and post-installation maintenance services to ensure seamless and hassle-free operations.

Our STPs are designed with advanced technologies that ensure high-efficiency pollutant removal, energy optimization, and minimal operational costs. Regular maintenance and monitoring services are also offered for sustained performance.
